One reason former Vice President Dick Cheney is in the news is the fact that he felt the need to speak in defense of the intelligence establishment and the government lawyers who authorized the treatment of prisoners in Guantanamo and elsewhere. We will never know what success they had. That is the very nature of the intelligence business. No responsible government can operate without intelligence. And after the 9/11 attacks the intelligence services didn’t want to be caught by surprise again. They knew the people who did it and they must have known how to get to them.
Interrogation is part of the game. If the prisoners to don’t resist, there is no need for torture.
